Responding to My Call
Do I love to serve God and His Holy Church?
Do I feel a tug on my heart to set myself apart for God?
Am I ready to take a radical step towards holiness?
If these questions are on your heart, God may be calling you to a vocation as a priest or religious. The word vocation comes from the Latin vocare which means “to call.” Each and every one of us has a vocation, or “a call” from God, but for some this call is to a consecrated way of life set apart from the world. Responding to this call can fill your life with much joy and many blessings but can also be an intimidating decision. In the words of St. John Paul II, “Be not afraid!” Consider taking these small steps to begin discerning where God is calling you:
Pray daily- Attend Mass regularly and reflect on the Scripture readings
- Have sincere conversations with friends, family, and mentors
- Participate in your parish community
- Serve in outreach ministries
- Talk to your pastor or spiritual director
- Explore different consecrated ways of life (see below)
- Reach out to the Vocations Director or Assistant Vocations Director
Prayer For Vocations
Gracious God, You have called me to life and gifted me in many ways. Through Baptism You have sent me to continue the mission of Jesus by sharing my love with others. Strengthen me to respond to Your call each day. Help me to become all You desire of me. Inspire me to make a difference in others' lives. Lead me to choose the way of life You have planned for me. Open the hearts of all to listen to Your call. Fill all with Your Holy Spirit that we may have listening hearts and the courage to respond to You. Enkindle in my heart and the hearts of others the desire to make the world a better place by serving as Lay Minister, Sister, Priest, Brother or Deacon. Amen. (USCCB)
