Bishop's statement on Proposal 3 PDF

Statement by the Most Reverend Jeffrey J. Walsh, bishop of Gaylord

My Dear people,

As faithful citizens, we look forward to casting our votes on November 8. Catholics in the Diocese of Gaylord are called to uphold the inherent dignity of all people by voting NO on Proposal 3, and its “anything goes” approach to the destruction of human life. The proper formation of our conscience guides us to reject this proposal and recognize that we would be actively participating in the promotion and expansion of the intrinsic moral evil of abortion if we vote otherwise.

This is a defining moment. With the recent U.S. Supreme Court decision overturning Roe versus Wade, every state in the Union is now tasked with the establishment of abortion laws. As of November 9, let it be said, pray God, that the state of Michigan reaffirmed the genius of our system of government by rejecting Proposal 3. “We the People” have the opportunity to shine a bright light on the familiar line in the U.S. Constitution which states: “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, and are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness.”

And now, allow me to close with the words of Sacred Scripture. Please take these words to heart:

“Remember your leaders who spoke the word of God to you; consider how their lives ended and imitate their faith. Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today and forever. Do not be carried away by all kinds of strange teaching.” (Hebrews 13:7-9).

Peace,

+Bishop Walsh

Vote NO on Proposal 3

The Catholic bishops in Michigan, together with the dioceses in this state, are calling on all Catholics to vote NO on Proposal 3 on the November election ballot. The proposal would create a constitutional amendment to allow for unlimited, unregulated abortion throughout all of pregnancy. It would also give legal immunity to a school worker or anyone who helps a teen get an abortion without the parents’ consent. For more information about the proposal and how to help defeat it, please visit dioceseofgaylord.org/defeatproposal3 for more information on how to connect with the official “Vote NO” campaign.

Stewardship by the Book

In today’s second reading, St. Paul prays that the Thessalonians may be strengthened “in every good deed and word.” May we, too, be strengthened and empowered to use our time and talents for the good of others.

Vocation View

As the Church-year comes to a close, may the Lord Jesus strengthen your heart for every good work and word. May you live your vocation

Stewardship Reflections

“May our Lord Jesus Christ himself and God our Father, who has loved us and given us everlasting encouragement and good hope through his grace, encourage your hearts and strengthen them in every good deed and word.”         2 Thessalonians 2:16-17

There are two important lessons here.  First, we are called to be generous with our encouragement and hope with others.  As God shows us mercy, we must be merciful to others.   Second, joy is contagious!  The joy we receive from doing good works not only strengthens us, it encourages others as well.  Share the joy of living your faith whenever you can

Family Perspective by Bud Ozar

The question of the Sadducees to Jesus is framed in a story about a family with seven brothers and their sister-in-law.  Through story telling families remember their shared past and expose the companionship of God in your family from generation to generation.
