Fr. Dale Magoon has passed to Eternal Life

Reverend Roger Dale Magoon entered eternal life on April 12, 2018 at the age of 83. He was born November 29, 1934 in Mackinaw City, Michigan to Basil C. and Christina (St. Antoine) Magoon. He attended Crossman School in Detroit, Whitmore Bolls School in Dearborn, and Benton and St. Charles Schools in Cheboygan. He attended St. Joseph Seminary in Grand Rapids, Seminaire de Philosophie in Montreal, and St. John’s Provincial Seminary in Plymouth. He was ordained on June 4, 1960 in the Cathedral of St. Andrew in Grand Rapids by the Most Reverend Allen J. Babcock.

Following his ordination, Father Magoon served as Assistant for the parishes of St. James in Grand Rapids, Cross in the Woods Catholic Shrine in Indian River, St. Thomas in Grand Rapids, Assumption in Belmont, St. Joseph in Manistee and St. Charles in Cheboygan. Beginning in 1969 he ministered as Pastor for the parishes of St. Mary in Kalkaska, St. Aloysius in Fife Lake, St. Mary in Charlevoix, the new parish to be established in Acme (which became Christ the King), St. Hubert in Higgins Lake, St. James in Houghton Lake, St. Paul in Onaway and St. Monica in Afton. On July 30, 1997 he was appointed Pastor for St. Anthony of Padua Parish in Mancelona where he remained until he moved to Gaylord in July 2017. Father Magoon also served as a vicar and consultor, as well as Bishop’s Liaison with Active Priests.

Father Magoon is survived by his brother, Gilbert (Jackie), and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother Eugene, and his sisters, Marlene and Sandra.

Visitation will be held on Sunday, April 22, 2018 from 11:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. at St. Anthony of Padua Church, 209 N. Jefferson, Mancelona, with a Rosary at noon. Visitation will continue on Monday, April 23 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Mary Cathedral, 606 N. Ohio Avenue, Gaylord before the Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 a.m. with the Most Reverend Steven J. Raica, Bishop of Gaylord, presiding. Father Magoon will be buried in St. Francis Cemetery in Alverno at a later date.
