Msgr. Murphy nominated for 2014 Lumen Christi Award

04/01/2014

Since 2012, the Diocese of Gaylord has been  recognized as a mission diocese by Catholic Extension. For those who are unfamiliar with the organization, the mission of Catholic Extension is to strengthen the Church's presence and mission in under-resourced communities across the United States. Catholic Extension provides funding and resources to dioceses and parishes through programs and services investing in people, infrastructure and ministries. This support is given based on need, passion and commitment to the growth of the Catholic faith. Here in the Diocese of Gaylord, we have received assistance to help fund a grant writer, partial funding for “Good Leaders Good Shepherds” -- leadership training program many of our priests completed last fall, seminarian education, spirituality formation, Baraga Broadcasting, funding for youth programs and specific assistance to the Alpena Catholic Community, St. Ignatius in Rogers City, St. Paul in Onaway and more.

Each year, Catholic Extension presents the Lumen Christi Award honoring an individual or organization working in one of America's mission dioceses who demonstrates how the power of faith can transform lives and communities. Lumen Christi recipients are laudable not only for the light and hope they bring to forgotten corners of the country, but for inspiring those around them to be "Lights of Christ" as well.

The Lumen Christi Award is accompanied by a $50,000 grant - $25,000 for the honoree and $25,000 for the nominating diocese - to be used for enhancing a specific area of ministry.

Our Diocesan Administrator Msgr. Frank Murphy is one of the nominees for the 2014 Lumen Christi Award.

This year there are 38 nominees nationwide, each of whom shines the “Light of Christ” in a special way in their local area.

One of several factors considered in determining the finalists is through an online voting poll. Voters must have a Facebook account and “Like” Catholic Extension. Only one vote is allowed per person (computer or network address). Deadline for voting is April 14.
