Join us for "Bishop's Golf Outing"
The Vocations Advisory Committee for the Diocese of Gaylord will host the first Bishops Golf Outing at Elk Ridge Golf Club in Atlanta, Michigan on Monday, August 5, 2013. All proceeds from the event will be used to support vocations in the Diocese of Gaylord. The scramble format tournament will begin with a shotgun start at 10:00 a.m. Cost is $100 per person/$400 per team and will include morning refreshments, lunch at the turn, dinner and prizes. Space is limited to 25 teams and registrations will be accepted on a first come-first served basis.
The Diocese of Gaylord has been blessed with an increase in the number of seminarians in recent years, said Fr. Don Geyman, Director of Vocations. "This increase, while a source of great hope, presents a financial challenge to the Diocese, given the costs that are involved with seminary education and other formation opportunities."
Recognizing that seminary costs can be quite high for small mission dioceses like Gaylord, the Catholic Extension Society has presented the Diocese an opportunity to be part of a challenge grant which will increase earnings by 33% on any new vocations fundraiser undertaken this year. As a new project, funds raised through the golf outing will qualify for the matching grant.
Elk Ridge Golf Club opened May 1991 and has been highly acclaimed over the years. In February of 2013 it was named to Golf Digests list of America's 100 Greatest Public Golf Courses. Designed by renowned Michigan architect Jerry Matthews, Elk Ridge offers stunning views of Northern Michigan amid an abundant variety of wildlife including eagles, deer, bear, bobcat and wild turkey.
Bishop Hebda and Fr. Geyman, along with a number of seminarians will be on hand for the golf outing which will take place rain or shine. The course offers a variety of challenges for every level of golfer, and players will have the opportunity to purchase mulligans that day in case a hole presents a little too much of a challenge. Other fun contests are also being planned.
Since it was announced at the annual Knights of Columbus Convention on Mackinac Island last month, anticipation for the event has been mounting. In fact, Fr. Geyman said, because of interest among the Knights, we have decided to add another award that will be presented to the top team representing a K of C Council at the outing.
The event, however, is open to anyone and all are welcome to participate, whether individually or as part of a team. Given the limited number of openings, it will be important to register early.
Sponsorship opportunities are also available for those who would like to promote their business or organization to golfers or simply to support the vocations fund raising effort. Hole sponsorships are available for $100 and hole contest sponsorships are $125.
