Fr. Rey Garcia, S.J., has passed away


Fr. Reynaldo A. Garcia, S.J., who served in the Diocese of Gaylord from 1999-2005, entered eternal life  on Wednesday, June 26, 2013, at Colombiere Center in Clarkston, Michigan. 

Fr. Rey was born on December 10, 1937 in Manila, Philippines. He entered the New Orleans Province of the Society of Jesus on August 14, 1968 at St. Charles College, Grand Coteau, Louisiana. He was ordained a priest on December 30, 1976 at St. Charles College, Grand Coteau. He took final vows on December 3, 1990. Rey transcribed from the New Orleans Province into the Detroit Province on December 8, 2009.

Fr. Rey earned a Bachelor's Degree in Science and Humanities from Iowa State University in 1958 and a certificate of Physiotherapy from Western Michigan University in 1963. He earned a Master's of Divinity from the Jesuit School of Theology in Chicago in 1977 and a Master's of Pastoral Counseling from Loyola University Chicago in 1987.

Fr. Rey worked in the social apostolate and did pastoral work throughout his Jesuit life. He was a regent in the Philippines at Centro Presidente Kennedy, Campinas (1972-1974), and as a priest at Ateneo de Davao University, Davao City (1982-1986). He was an associate pastor at the Slum Resettlement Area, San Pedro Laguna (1978-1981) before becoming a chaplain at Cook County Hospital, Chicago (1987-1992). Fr. Rey was an associate pastor at Gesu Church, Miami (1993-1995 and 1997-1998) and did pastoral work in the Bahia Province, Manaus, Amazonas (1995-1997). He was pastor of St. Wenceslaus in Suttons Bay, Michigan (1999-2005). He also served as an associate pastor (2005) and pastor (2006-2010) at St. Anne de Michilimackinac parish on Mackinac Island. Then he worked at Manresa Jesuit Retreat House, Bloomfield Hills, Michigan (2010-2012) before moving to Colombiere Center in 2012.

Visitation will take place on Monday, July 1, 2013, from 4:00 - 7:00 p.m. at the Colombiere Center (9075 Big Lake Road in Clarkston, MI 48346-1015). A Vigil Service will begin at  7:30 p.m.

A Mass of Christian Burial will take place on Tuesday, July 2, 2013 at 10:45 a.m. also at the Colombiere Center.  A Burial Service will take place immediately following the funeral.
