Register Now for the 2013 Catholic Men's Conference in Traverse City

All men are invited to attend the annual Diocese of Gaylord Men’s Conference on Saturday, March 2, from 9 am to 4 pm at St. Francis High School in Traverse City. This year’s conference, “Be a Man and Surrender to Christ,” will be headlined by Father Larry Richards, who has conducted retreats for men old and young and in between.

Father Larry, a native of Pittsburgh, is the pastor of St. Joseph Church/Bread of Life Community in Erie, Pennsylvania, and is the founder and president of The Reason for Our Hope Foundation. The non-profit organization was founded to educate about Jesus Christ in order to “spread the good news.” He has conducted numerous retreats and currently serves as the Spiritual Director for the To Encounter Christ Retreat program for his home diocese of Erie. In 2009, he authored “Be a Man! Becoming the Man God Created You to Be,” which became a best-seller for Ignatius Press.

As the host of Relevant Radio’s Changed Forever, Father Larry is broadcast weekly into the homes and hearts of many across the nation, delivering the message that a relationship with God isn’t just about changing personal habits; it’s about changing one’s life. Known for his direct yet friendly style, Father Larry weaves that same message in to the challenge he presents to men of all ages: to become a true man of God. “When we get to where we know that God has to be everything, then we can start living the life that God wants us to live,” he has said. [1] Father Larry teaches men how to pursue a holy way of living by acknowledging one’s faults and limitations.

A graduate of Gannon University, Father Larry earned Bachelor of Arts degree in Mental Health prior to earning his Masters of Divinity in 1987. He was ordained to the priesthood for the Diocese of Erie in 1989 and has since worked extensively in urban parishes.

Also speaking at the conference will be the Most Reverend Bernard A. Hebda, Bishop of Gaylord, and Father Don Geyman, Director of Vocations for the Diocese of Gaylord.

Bishop Hebda, also a Pittsburgh native, is a graduate of Harvard University in Cambridge, Massachusetts, and the Columbia University School of Law in New York City. He received his Licentiate in Canon Law from the Pontifical Gregorian University. Prior to being named Bishop of Gaylord, he served 13 years in Rome in the Pontifical Council for Legislative Texts, the last six as Under-Secretary of the Council.

In 2009, he was appointed and installed as the fourth Bishop of Gaylord, succeeding the late Bishop Patrick R. Cooney.

As Vocations Director, Father Don Geyman oversees the formation and discernment of all of the men currently studying to become priests of the diocese. He was most recently Pastor of St. Patrick’s parish in Traverse City and has previously served parishes in Cheboygan, Alpena, and East Tawas. Ordained a priest in 1996, Father Don received a degree in Business and Accounting from the University of Michigan prior to his priestly formation.

The day will conclude with Mass celebrated by Bishop Hebda at 4 p.m., during which families are welcome to join. The retreat cost is $25 per person and includes lunch. Men are encouraged to bring their sons (age 16-19) free of charge. A registration form may be downloaded below or register online at For more information, please call Kevin Endres at 231.534.5225.
