Mothers and Daughters Enjoy Weekend Retreat

05/02/2012

In March, thirty participants from the Diocese of Gaylord attended the Mystical Rose Mother and Daughter Retreat at the Augustine Center in Conway. The experience allowed mothers and their teen daughters time away from the busy-ness of everyday life and an opportunity to connect with other women of the diocese during a weekend fun and faith focused on learning from the example of Mary, Our Blessed Mother. The retreat was led by Fr. Matthew Wigton, Pastor of St. Mary Parish in Charlevoix. Fr. Wigton spoke eloquently about Mary explaining how simply learning more about this great figure in our faith helps draw us closer to her. Other talks were given by Elizabeth Gengle, Youth Minister at St. Francis Xavier Parish in Petoskey and Marie Hahnenberg, who helps lead the Diocese of Gaylord Women’s Vocation efforts. In addition to spiritual direction and presentations on Mary, Love, and Finding True Womanhood, the girls enjoyed special time with their mothers through Mass, prayer, Adoration and the Sacrament of Reconciliation. The weekend also included a game of ultimate Frisbee and creating rose bouquets. During one of the workshops, the mothers and daughters were asked to create some goals in their spiritual life as well as their intellect, physical and social lives. The mothers and their daughters had time to discuss these goals and how they can help each other reach them. Among the highlights was a Saturday evening beauty session offered by Kathy Barton, an adult volunteer. Mothers and daughters enjoyed a chocolate fountain while receiving facials and were able to take home free samples. The event was sponsored by the Petoskey JPII Youth Ministry and Mystical Rose Daughters of Faith young women’s ministry of the Diocese of Gaylord.
