Register Now for Women's Conference

Women from across the diocese are invited to gather for a special conference on September 10 at the Diocesan Pastoral Center in Gaylord. This is the first conference sponsored by the diocese specifically designed for women. Themed “Feed My Hunger,” Dannie Brzezinski, Director of Faith Formation for the Diocese of Gaylord, and a steering committee of women from several parishes and the DCCW are putting the finishing touches on the itinerary for the day. The conference is planned as one of the special events celebrating the 40th Anniversary of the Diocese of Gaylord.

“It will be a marvelous day for women to come together in prayer and celebration. We will be nourished by marvelous speakers and the gathered spirit of women of all ages and in all stages of life ,” explained Brzezinski.

The event will begin with registration and refreshments at 8:00 a.m. A Eucharistic Liturgy celebrated by Bishop Bernard A. Hebda will center participants bringing the day into focus.

Four dynamic presenters have been tapped to speak at this inaugural event: Sr. Ann Shields, SGL; Heidi Hess Saxton; Katie Diller; and Jane Cardinal. Each of these women will utilize their unique gifts to offer spiritually uplifting presentations for the attendees.

Sister Ann Shields, SGL, is a noted speaker and author whose activities as an internationally known evangelist have taken her to Eastern Europe, Africa, Australia, New Zealand, the Caribbean, Central America, Israel, the Philippines, and the British Isles, as well as numerous cities in the United States and Canada. Based in Ann Arbor, Sister Ann is the Superior of the Servants of God’s Love, a charismatic religious community canonically established in the Diocese of Lansing, Michigan.

Sr. Ann served in higher education for eighteen years as an English instructor and as head of college campus ministry. She is currently the host of a daily radio program, “Food for the Journey.”

Heidi Hess Saxton is an author, musician, and married mother of two. Heidi writes about faith and family life, especially for families of adopted, foster, and special-needs children. She received her Master’s degree in Systematic Theology and Spirituality from Sacred Heart Major Seminary in Detroit and she is a regular contributor to,, and Heidi’s blog is the “Extraordinary Moms Network,” and her books include “Let Nothing Trouble You,” “Behold Your Mother,” and “Raising Up Mommy.”

Katie Diller is one of two speakers with roots in the Diocese who will be presenting at the conference. Katie grew up in Presque Isle County. She was active in campus ministry while a student at Michigan State University. Graduating in from MSU in 2004 with a degree in Biology from Lyman Briggs College, she went on to receive a Master of Education from the University of Notre Dame. She also holds a Master of Science degree in Cell Biology from Yale University and a Master of Arts in Theological Studies from the University of Dayton. Katie has led international mission trips and taught courses for study abroad programs for college students, and has been active in campus ministry at numerous student parishes across the country. Enthusiastic about young people and her Catholic faith, Katie returned to Michigan State last summer and serves as a Campus Minister reaching out to the 47,000 student population – 12,000 of whom identify themselves as Catholic.

Jane Cardinal rounds out the speakers and is also a local talent. Jane graduated from Michigan State University with a degree in Fine Arts. She has worked with such noted companies as Disney, Warner Brothers, and Sesame Street as well as product lines that include the Hello Kitty brand. Jane is retired now but still paints -- mostly icons -- from her home near Harbor Springs. She will speak on spirituality and art.

Cost for the day, which includes lunch and refreshments, is $20 per person. Child care will be available with advanced registration only. Anyone who would like to donate toward a scholarship for women unable to afford the cost of the conference can do so by sending a check to the Diocese of Gaylord and adding “Women's Conference Scholarship Fund” on the memo line.
