Day of Prayer and Penance for LIfe

Since 2002, January 22nd has been designated by the U.S. Bishops as a particular day of penance for violations to the dignity of the human person committed through acts of abortion, and of prayer for the full restoration of the legal guarantee of the right to life. The date corresponds to the anniversary of the Roe v Wade decision to legalize abortion which marks its 38th anniversary this year. Abortion currently occurs over 1.2 million times each year, with more than 50 million lives lost since 1973.

There are multiple ways of observing this national day of prayer and penance. Some parishes will celebrate the Mass for Peace and Justice; others will hold prayer services. Please see the listing below or check with your local parish to find out what is scheduled in your area.

There are many actions in which individuals and groups can engage to observe the day as well as Sanctity for Human Life Sunday:

  • Fasting
  • Praying a rosary or chaplet for the unborn
  • Praying for those who have been wounded by abortion
  • Praying for those from our diocese who will be participating in the National March for Life in Washington
  • Visiting and praying before the Blessed Sacrament
  • Reading and reflecting on Pope John Paul II’s Evangelium Vitae in full
  • Becoming involved with the pro-life group in your town or area

Prayer resources and many articles and materials are available through the USCCB ProLife website.
