Youth help young adults in quest to attend World Youth Day

01/03/2011

Boyne Valley Catholic Community Junior High Youth Ministry program demonstrated a unique understanding of what it means to be part of a diocese, indeed, the universal Catholic Church, when they decided to support young adults planning to join Pope Benedict XVI for the upcoming World Youth Day. Through a fundraiser named “Cookies for Madrid,” the junior high students raised $236 to help the seminarians from the Diocese of Gaylord with expenses associated with participating in World Youth Day next year in Spain.

“What’s especially remarkable is that none of these students themselves is old enough to participate in this journey,” said Fr. Don Geyman, Director of Vocations. “The only thing they asked is that one o f the seminarians come and talk to them about the experience when they get back.”

In what has become an annual event, World Youth Day is celebrated internationally every three years and is specifically geared for young adults aged 18-35. For 2011, Pope Benedict XVI has invited young adults from around the globe to gather with him in Madrid. All 11 Seminarians, along with 20 other young adults from the Diocese of Gaylord hope to make the pilgrimage, but financial assistance remains greatly needed. World Youth Day encourages young Catholics in their faith, energizing them to draw others to Christ!

Those interested in making a donation or a gift in the name of someone else for a special event or holiday present are invited to do so and will be acknowledged with a personalized card. Our Seminarians will carry all prayer intentions with them to World Youth Day in Madrid. Send your gift (including the name and address of your honoree) to: World Youth Day Fund, Diocese of Gaylord, 611 West North Street , Gaylord, MI 49735 or click on the "Make a Gift"  link on the left of this page.

Thank you for your support of this effort.
