Diocese Seeks Artwork to Promote Vocations Awareness

12/01/2010

As the Diocese prepares to celebrate its 40th Anniversary, one of the first events in the new year will be Vocations Awareness Week. In past years, students throughout the diocese have participated in contests highlighting vocations awareness. Previous contests have included posters, cartoons, videos, window slicks, and prayer cards.

To help celebrate Vocations Awareness Week 2011 (January 9-15), the Vocations Advisory Committee asked Bishop Bernard Hebda to write a special prayer for vocations (see sidebar). Youth from Kindergarten through College are now invited to showcase their artistic talents by submitting a piece of original artwork to illustrate that prayer. Winning entries will be combined with the Bishop’s prayer to create unique prayer cards.

Any student whose family is registered at a parish in the diocese is encouraged to submit an entry to the contest. There are five age divisions: Grades K-2, Grades 3-5, Grades 6-8, High School (grades 9-12), and Young Adult (age 18 to 25).

Artwork must be original and should be presented on 8-1/2 x 11 paper and may be sketched in crayon, marker, paint, or other medium. (Final size of the prayer card will be 4 x 6 so artwork should be scalable to that size). All entries must be accompanied by an entry form. Winners will be selected in each age group by a jury selected by the Diocese of Gaylord’s Vocation Advisory Committee with winners each receiving a $100 Savings Bond.

Prayer cards will be created using the winning entries with credit given to the artist and will be distributed throughout the Diocese of Gaylord and beyond for use in homes, parishes, and schools to pray for vocations.

Entry forms are available at all Catholic School, Parish Offices or click on the link below to download one. Entries must be received at the Diocesan Vocations Office no later than January 5, 2011. Winners will be announced at the Vocations Recognition Dinner on January 8.

Though some Catholic Schools and Religious Education Programs in the diocese may make a class project of this contest, all young people are encouraged to participate.

Entries should be sent to: Vocations Awareness Contest, Diocese of Gaylord, 611 West North Street, Gaylord, Michigan 49735. For more information, contact the Vocations Office at 989.732.5147.
