Senior Expos Planned for Alpena and Cheboygan
Everyone is invited to the 2010 Senior Expos to be held in October in Alpena and Cheboygan. These annual events attract hundreds of area seniors and those who care for them, providing an abundance of health and wellness information, resources and assistance available in their local communities. Coordinated by Catholic Human Services in collaboration with the Diocese of Gaylord, local Catholic churches, as well as other area agencies in Cheboygan and Alpena, the expos provide an opportunity to learn about many health issues of particular interest to seniors through one special event.
The Alpena Senior Health Fair will be held on Tuesday, October 5, from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church (2550 South First Street, Alpena). Participants can browse a variety of vendor booths with products and services that address specific senior concerns. (See sidebar for list of exhibitors.) Door prizes, giveaways and literature will be offered throughout the event, and free sack lunches will be distributed beginning at 11:30 a.m.
Free health screenings will also be featured at the Alpena Senior Health Fair. Pre-registration is required for the Health Screenings which can be scheduled by calling 989.356.8001. The screening will include checking Total Cholesterol; HDL; and Blood Sugar. Other free screenings include: Glaucoma; Blood Pressure; Bone Density and an Oral Health Exam. Flu shots will also be available. Seniors are asked to bring their Medicare card.
At 11:45 a.m., Kara LaMarre, Developmental Projects Coordinator for Area Agency on Aging will offer a presentation entitled, Do you know you are a caregiver? A question and answer period will follow.
The Alpena Senior Health Fair is brought to you by Alpena Regional Medical Center; TenderCare of Alpena and Greenview; Alpena Senior Center; Luther Community Manor; and St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, with funding support from the Diocese of Gaylord, Catholic Human Services, and Region 9 Area Agency on Aging.
The Cheboygan 2010 Senior Expo will take place Thursday, October 21 from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. and has adopted the theme, Celebrating Health & Wellness. The event will take place at the Knights of Columbus Hall, 9480 North Straits Highway, Cheboygan (at the corner of M-27 and M-33.) The Senior Expo will feature local community resources and information for seniors, their families and caregivers and is open to the adult general public.
The Cheboygan Expo will also feature local and regional resource representatives and displays as well as free health screenings; family caregiver information; health and wellness Information; and valuable senior resource information.
Snacks, door prizes and musical entertainment are all on tap for the Cheboygan event. Plus, the Knights of Columbus are offering free rides the day of the event. To reserve a ride to the event, please call in advance to 231.627.9110 or 231.327.5088.
