Diocese Seeks Input from Youth
The Diocese of Gaylord has announced plans to hold a Youth Congress on March 20 Diocesan Pastoral Center in Gaylord. Dannie Brzezinski, Director of the Secretariat for Faith Development, cited the day as an opportunity to employ our youth in actively building their faith. In a letter sent to all parishes and schools of the diocese, Brzezinski explained, Faith development in the Diocese of Gaylord embraces the lifelong pursuit of learning, of growing, and of becoming faithful disciples of Christ. Faith Development opportunities must be accessible to all -- at every state and stage of life. Our youth bring to the Church a voice of particular energy and vibrancy. It is this voice and faith that Youth Congress: 2010 seeks to hear and engage. The four goals for Youth Congress: 2010 are to empower young people to live as disciples; to draw young people into the life, mission, and work of the Church; to foster personal and spiritual growth in our youth; and to develop a Gaylord Diocesan Youth Council. All high school youth (grades 9-12) from across the diocese are encouraged to attend the day-long event which will begin at 10:30 a.m. in Gaylord. Bishop Bernard Hebda will be the keynote speaker, with alumni from previous Christian Leadership Institutes (CLI) facilitating round table discussions during the day. A Eucharistic Liturgy, with Bishop Hebda presiding, will close the Congress. The event will also offer an opportunity to join in a Ministry in Action activity to Set One Aside. Participants are encouraged to set one dollar aside for a special collection that will be taken during Youth Congress: 2010. Monies collected will be matched by the Diocese of Gaylord, and the youth participating that day will choose a charity or cause to be the recipient of their ministry in action. Cost to attend is $15.00 per person nd registration forms may be downloaded below. Those interested may also contact their parish office or call the diocesan offices at 989.732.5147. This event will lead to the development of a Gaylord Diocesan Youth Council (GDYC), Brzezinski noted. We expect the new Council will be made up of 30 youth from across the diocese with representation from all six vicariates, the Hispanic Apostolate, and each of the four Catholic High Schools. Though the process to select those on the Council is still being finalized, the initial discernment will begin at Youth Congress: 2010. The discernment process will eventually include a retreat with the hope that the Youth Council will be in place by the start of the 2010-11 school year. Youth Congress:2010 is funded in part by gifts to the annual Catholic Services Appeal (CSA).
