Rite of Election to Welcome and Pray for Catechumens

All the faithful in the Diocese of Gaylord are invited to attend The Rite of Election which will take place Sunday, February 21, 2010, 4:00 p.m., at St. Mary Cathedral in Gaylord. Bishop Bernard A. Hebda will preside. On this first Sunday of Lent, individuals from over 20 parishes within our Diocese will be formally welcomed as catechumens. Early in Church history, God chose a people and established a covenant with them. Today, God continues to choose his people through the covenant of Baptism. During the Easter Vigil, those who will now be named the “elect” will celebrate the Sacraments of Initiation in their home parishes. During the Rite of Election, sponsors and godparents will publicly affirm that the candidates are prepared to be admitted to the sacraments of Christian initiation and the assembly will pledge to continue to support them in faith, prayer and example. The catechumens will also affirm their desire to fully enter into the life of the Church through the sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation and Eucharist. A reception in the St. Mary Cathedral Parish Hall will be held for all who are planning to attend from 3:00 - 3:45 p.m. preceding the ceremony.
