Sign up Now for World Youth Day 2011
"You, dear young people, are the hope of the Church! She hopes that you will make yourselves messengers of hope, is the message of Pope Benedict XVI to young adults, encouraging them to come together for World Youth Day.
Young adults of the Diocese of Gaylord (ages 18 35) are invited to join Bishop Bernard Hebda for a pilgrimage to World Youth Day 2011, in Madrid, Spain. The pilgrimage to Madrid will take place August 14 23, 2011.
Bishop Hebda was able to participate in World Youth Day 2000 in Rome. It was a magnificent experience to see the interaction between young people from around the world who had come to Rome to celebrate and deepen their faith, Bishop Hebda reflected. He said he would never forget that the two million young people gathered for the Saturday evening vigil were so wonderfully open to the Holy Fathers message and roared their approval.
"Rooted and built up in him and established in the faith" (Colossians 2:7) is the theme for the 11th international World Youth Day, since the gatherings birth in 1987. Madrid expects over 2 million to gather for prayer, catechesis, cultural sharing, and the culminating event the overnight prayer vigil and Mass with Pope Benedict XVI. The Diocese of Gaylord has combined efforts with the Dioceses of Grand Rapids, Kalamazoo, and Marquette in order to offer pilgrims the most flexibility. Participants can choose between hotel accommodations or simple accommodations, and also have the option of arriving early for Days in the Diocese a brief immersion experience within a diocese near Madrid.
I am hopeful that the experience of being there with the youth of our Diocese, together soaking in the Holy Fathers message, will further strengthen the ties that unite us and give us a clearer direction of where the Holy Spirit may be calling us to go and grow, added Bishop Hebda. The opportunity to go to Madrid to pray with -- and learn from -- the Successor of St. Peter is a once in a lifetime opportunity that can really give direction to young adults as they strive to figure out how God is calling them to build up His Church. The contact with the history and vitality of the Church in Madrid could also be an eye-opener for our young adults, reminding them that the Church is larger than the Diocese of Gaylord.
The initial deadline to register is April 1, 2010. Registration forms may be downloaded below or contact Fr. James Bearss at 989.732.5448. For more information on upcoming youth events, click here.
