Cantor Express to Make Stop in Gaylord

The Secretariat for Worship and Liturgical Formation of the Diocese of Gaylord is pleased to announce that a special institute for cantors will take place at the Diocesan Pastoral Center in Gaylord this summer. Facilitated by the National Association of Pastoral Ministers (NPM), the weekend event will be one of four such institutes offered across the country for this ministry. The weekend has something to offer cantors at all levels: beginner, advanced, and professional. Most cantors are proficient in some areas but need to develop in others. Some participants are discerning whether this ministry is right for them and come simply to explore. This institute offers an opportunity to assess areas for growth, begin to fill in gaps, and lay the groundwork for a firmer foundation for ministry. The weekend includes interactive lectures, discussion, reflection, skill building (group voice classes, interpretation, and coaching), and repertoire that best reflects the core identity of the cantor. At some points in the weekend, there will be the opportunity to choose sessions according to needs of the individuals. Those interested are asked to come with an open mind and reasonable expectations. The institute will offer everything from teaching the basics of reading music to helping those who have had vocal training learn how to sing using interpretive skills by offering some useful tools. Those with limited knowledge of Scripture, liturgy, and the psalms, will find the studies especially helpful. Though the time will be relatively short, the information shared from the leader’s liturgical heritage and resources will provide useful tools for ministry, and lead to additional resources. The dates for the Gaylord event are July 24-26 with Joe Simmons and Mary Lynn Pleczkowski serving as faculty. Cost for the Institute and meals will be $300 for those taking advantage of advance registration by June 24. After June 24 there is an additional $50 fee for the Institute. Those needing housing can stay at the Hampton Inn, Gaylord. The cost for housing is an additional $69 per room, per night, plus tax - mention “Group block for diocese” when registering to receive this special price by June 24. Local coordinator for the event is Denise Sinke, Music/Liturgy Coordinator for Holy Childhood of Jesus, Harbor Springs. She can be reached by phone at the church (231.526.2017) or via email at Registration and more information can also be found below or by visting the National Association of Pastoral Musicians website.
