DCCW Announces Annual Convention

Every year on the second Wednesday in May, the Gaylord Diocesan Council of Catholic Women (DCCW) holds their annual convention. This year, the 37th on record, the event will be held Wednesday, May 13, at the Gaylord Diocese Pastoral Center, 611 W. North Street, Gaylord. The theme for 2009 is “Faith in Action.” The convention is for all women of the diocese and is an opportunity to reconnect, to hear inspiring speakers and to learn what new things are happening in the diocese. Typically more than 250 women attend the event. Keynote speaker will be Cathryn Torgerson. Torgerson returned to the Catholic Church in the last 1990's. Her desire to understand her faith led her to Sacred Heart Major Seminary where she completed her M.A. in Catholic Theology in 2009. She taught adults for ten years in the corporate world, and she now uses those skills to share her theological studies with the Catholic community. She has worked with returning Catholics and adult education, and she currently volunteers with teens. Togerson has presented at academic and faith formation conferences, and she has been published in Pastoral Life, the Lansing Catholic Times, and Liguorian. Bishop Cooney is expected to also address the participants at the convention. As in previous years, parishes are asked to donate baby layettes. The layettes are then given to Catholic Human Services to be utilized over northern Michigan. The DCCW ladies have been overwhelmingly generous in the past. This year, with the economic challenges facing our area, the need is even greater. The day begins with registration at 9:00. Every woman of the Gaylord Diocese is a member of the DCCW and is invited to attend. Cost is $20.00 which includes materials and lunch. Contact your local DCCW representative to register or find more information posted on the DCCW website or you can email: Payment must accompany registration and reservations are due May 6. To speak to a ticket chairwoman, call Gen Reynolds at 989.354.3208 or Joyce Ryther at 989.356.1165.
