Divine Mercy Sunday Devotions

During his homily at the canonization ceremony of St. Faustina Kowalski, Pope John Paul II highlighted the message of mercy manifested to her in Poland during the first half of the 20th century, and gave approval for all who wish to do so to participate in a private devotion growing out of St. Faustina’s experiences. The devotion centers upon the mercy of God as found in the suffering of Christ which is seen as a clear expression of his love being poured out in mercy toward all of us. Additionally, this Sunday is enriched by a plenary indulgence “so that the faithful might receive in great abundance the gift of the consolation of the Holy Spirit.” The following parishes have planned special devotions for Divine Mercy Sunday:

  • Holy Childhood, Harbor Springs: The Divine Mercy Chaplet will be sung at 3:00 p.m.
  • St. Paul, Onaway: Sacrament of Reconciliation will be offered on Saturday, April 18 beginning at 4:15 p.m. On Sunday, April 19, Adoration with Benediction will be held from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. The Extraordinary Form of the Mass will be celebrated at 2:30 p.m. The Chaplet of Divine Mercy will be prayed and a Blessing of the Divine Mercy Image will begin at 3:30 p.m.
  • St. Francis Xavier, Petoskey: The Rosary and Chaplet of Divine Mercy will be prayed with Benediction beginning at 3:00 on Sunday, April 19.
  • St. Stephen, Lake City: A Holy Hour for the Feast of Divine Mercy will be held on Sunday, April 19, beginning at 3:00 p.m. Additional opportunities for the Sacrament of Reconciliation will also be offered during the week prior to Divine Mercy Sunday.
  • St. Mary-St. Charles, Cheboygan: A Holy Hour for the Feast of Divine Mercy with Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament will be held on Sunday, April 19 beginning at 2:30 p.m The Rosary will be prayed, the Divine Mercy Chaplet will be sung and prayers for the intentions of the Holy Father will be offered.
  • St. John the Baptist, Alpena: Devotions for the Feast of Divine Mercy be held on Sunday, April 19, beginning at 2:00 p.m. A potluck dinner will follow the devotion service. Please bring a dish to pass.
  • Catholic Community of Manistee, Manistee: A Divine Mercy Sunday Prayer Service will be celebrated at St. Mary of Mount Carmel Shrine in Manistee on Sunday, April 19 at 3 pm. At the prayer service the Divine Mercy Chaplet will be sung and the Blessed Sacrament will be exposed for adoration by the faithful.
  • Immaculate Conception, Traverse City: The Traverse City Vicariate will offer a Divine Mercy Prayer Service on Sunday, April 19 at 3:00 p.m.
  • St. Catherine, Ossineke: Divine Mercy Devotional Prayers, Sunday, April 19 at 12:00 noon (following the 11:00 a.m. Mass)
