Transition of Clergy Process
In 1995 the Diocese of Gaylord introduced a new process for the transition of clergy which involves the parish as well as the priest in transfer. The process is intended to help prepare members of the parish, through parish leadership, for the change that will take place. It includes sessions to help the outgoing priest enter this period of change in a healthy and supportive way. Following is a brief explanation of the goals and three phases of this process:
For Outgoing Pastors/Pastoral Administrators
The process provides the opportunity to say good-bye to the parish in a manner that would put closure on their pastorates, while giving a sense of support and a vision for the future.
For Members of the Parish
A structured process for the parish provides time for thoughtful reflection on the past and on future needs of the parish. It will provide the time for coping with loss of the present pastor/pastoral administrator while preparing to welcome the new parish leadership.
For Parish Staff
The process includes a component that addresses the needs of the parish staff. It includes addressing the issues of letting go of personal preferences in order to be open and welcoming to the new pastor/pastoral administrator and to new expectations.
For the Prospective Pastors/Pastoral Administrators
The new pastor/pastoral administrator will have an opportunity to reflect on the parish profile and hopes for the future of the parishioners. They will have time to identify their own dreams and expectations and reflect on how these can be best fulfilled.
For the Diocese
The diocese would provide a new option for the placement of pastors/pastoral administrators. The option would address the needs of the outgoing pastors/pastoral administrators, parishioners, parish staff and the incoming pastors/pastoral administrators.
