CSA Supports the Holy Land
March 10, 2008
On Good Friday, March 21, 2008, the Collection for the Holy Land will be taken in many dioceses throughout the United States. The funds collected support the sacred places, educational and charitable institutions of the Holy Land and educate young men for the Missions of the Custody of the Holy Land in Syria, Jordan, Lebanon, Cyprus, Rhodes, Israel and Egypt.
For these sons and daughters of the land sanctified by the Lord’s life, death and resurrection, life has become intolerable. An extreme scarcity of housing (especially for couples), plummeting salaries, declining purchasing power and the shadow of violence and hatred have driven many followers of Christ to emigrate in search of a better life.
Yet as the Custos of the Holy Land, Fr. Pierbattista Pizzaballa, recently said, “As Christians, we have a historical task: not to abandon the land of the Lord, to be there, to stay there, to be Christians there.”
Since the thirteenth century, the Order of St. Francis has worked not only to make Christianity’s holiest sites accessible to all the faithful, but to preserve the Holy Land’s precious Christian community, the “living stones of the Church.”
The primary means of support for this work is the annual Good Friday Collection. In the Diocese of Gaylord, the Holy Land missions are supported by your generous contribution to the Catholic Services Appeal. For more information please visit www.myfranciscan.org.
