Job Summary

Gesu Parish and School located in Detroit, MI is a diverse, long-standing, and highly respected ministry in the City of Detroit.  The primary role of the Pastoral Associate is to share the overall care of the parish with the pastor.  He or she is a member of the parish pastoral team in promoting the Mission and Vision of Gesu.  The ministry of the pastoral associate is comprehensive, relating to all aspects of parish life, but with designated responsibilities in various areas of specialized need, including but not limited to evangelization, liturgy, adult faith formation and development, administration, RCIA, pastoral care, and social outreach.  The responsibilities assigned to the pastoral associate fluctuate depending on the goals and needs of a specific time within the parish.


Master’s degree in Divinity, Theology, Pastoral Ministry, Religious Studies or its equivalent strongly preferred.
Parish based ministry experience of at least three (3) years required.
Working and theoretical knowledge of Catholic sacramental theology including current Church and Canon law and teaching and issues related to: RCIA, Baptism, Confirmation, Eucharist, Reconciliation, Marriage, Anointing and Funeral Rites.
Demonstrate a working knowledge of theology that can be translated into practical pastoral and liturgical situations.

The successful candidate:

Collaborates with parish staff and leadership in the management of the parish and the sharing of Christ in and through the Church.
Collaborates with administration, faculty and staff of Gesu School.
Develops financial planning for designated areas of responsibility to include budget and tracking of expenditures in Faith Formation, Liturgy and RCIA.
Provides a warm welcome and assistance to people who seek to become active and participating members of Gesu Parish, by coordinating with our Hospitality Ministry to ensure new registrations are entered and follow-up is completed in a timely fashion.
Creatively forms and coordinates ministers and service teams to provide ministry to the parish.
Works with pastor to facilitate scheduling and details of special parish events.

Develops creative ways to communicate desired messages through Gesu website, social media and any other effective communication platform.


Provides spiritual enrichment, support and pastoral counseling under the direction of the pastor

Coordinates Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA)
Responsible for the coordination of sacramental preparation in collaboration with Catechesis of the Good Shepherd.

Active member of Pastoral Team & Parish Council and/or works closely with the Parish Council.

Responsible for adult faith formation.

Collaborates with the head of the parish commissions and the school principal in assisting with ministry to our senior adult, adult, youth and children populations.

Develops or directs social programs for families – collaborate with other pastoral staff to maintain involvement of families through children’s formation, youth ministry, etc.

Is a visible participant in Sunday Masses (Saturday vigil), exhibiting an active faith life.

Connects with Archdiocesan initiatives on evangelization programming and resources.
Acts as a liaison to staff with evangelization team/committee.
Participate with Archdiocesan/Vicariate meetings and functions as required.
