MISSION STATEMENT

The Human Resources Department of the Diocese of Gaylord is committed to providing safe environment for children, and other services and benefits which promote spiritual as well as personal growth for everyone. Through these programs, we strive to foster a comfortable work environment and enhance positive work relationships. Our policies are administered completely and inclusively to ensure the consistent and equitable treatment of all. This will enable us to be dedicated professionals committed to our jobs and to our Church.

With the above Mission Statement at the forefront of what we do, the Human Resources Office is responsible for the maintenance of personnel records for the diocesan central offices, oversees the administration of employee benefits and maintains payroll information for the central office staff. We also provide human resource services for all the schools and parishes in the diocese for job descriptions, performance appraisals, salary ranges, salary surveys and human resource training.

The staff is also available to assist schools and parishes with questions related to employment and benefits for any staff member.

Application and Background Check Information

When applying for a Parish or School employment position or Parish volunteer position, an Application and Authorization form for the back ground check is to be completed and submitted to the Diocesan Human Resources Office for any individual who wishes to be considered for hiring or service.

When applying for a School volunteer position, an Authorization form for the background check is to be completed and submitted directly to the School entity.  Copies of necessary Application and Authorization forms are available below or through the Diocesan Human Resources Office, Diocesan Secretariat for Administrative services and on this website under Human Resources.

Listed below are the current necessary forms for any parish or school applicant, employee, or volunteer who is required to undergo a criminal background check:

Criminal Background Check Policy

Since October 1, 2003, the Diocese of Gaylord has required all church an school personnel (clergy, religious and lay) who have regular contact with minors to have a criminal history background check and Safe Environment training. Failure to do so will result in the loss of employment or volunteer position.

A. Regardless of position, all School Employees, and those School Volunteers who are expected to have regular contact with minors eight (8) or more hours each month shall have a fingerprint criminal background check as well as an (iCHAT) Criminal History Access Tool background check through the Michigan State Police.

B.        Regardless of position, all Parish Employees, as well as those Parish Volunteers who are expected to have regular contact with minors each month, or for extended hours intermittently, Homebound Ministers, Money Counters, Catechists and all other School volunteers who are not required to have Fingerprints, shall have an (ICHAT) Criminal History Access Tool background check through the Michigan State Police.

C.        No criminal background check is required for other Parish Ministerial Volunteers who are not expected to have regular contact with minors each month or for extended hours intermittently (for example, Eucharistic ministers, ushers, altar servers, lectors, greeters, sacristans, choir members and musicians, parish council members, and  finance council members).

Safe Environment Programs

Safe Environment Programs are required for volunteers or employees in the Diocese of Gaylord. As of July 1, 2015, Bishop Raica has mandated that each employee and each volunteer who has regular contact with children complete safe environment training through VIRTUS.

Virtus Training

All those who minister to children or young people are to be educated about the nature of child sexual abuse, how it is perpetrated, how to report it, and strategies for prevention.  The Diocese of Gaylord has implemented a training program by the name of “VIRTUS”.  VIRTUS is a national program, widely in use in dioceses throughout the United States.  It is a web-based, on-line training program that specializes in helping churches and religious organizations create safe environments for children and youth.  VIRTUS is mandatory for all adult School employees and volunteers.

VIRTUS is also mandatory for all Parish and Diocesan employees, as well as those volunteers who are expected to have regular contact with children or vulnerable adults each month or for extended hours intermittently.

Log on to the Diocese of Gaylord website (www.dioceseofgaylord.org), go to “Offices & Ministries”, proceed to “Human Resources” and finally to the “Virtus” heading.  You will create a user ID and password and complete the course that is offered there for the Diocese of Gaylord.  At the end of the VIRTUS course, you will be issued an on line Certificate.  Please print the Certificate and present it to your hiring entity (parish or school).

There is an expected protocol and need for recognition of boundaries when dealing with minors. The Diocese of Gaylord has a Code of Conduct-Protocols for Ministry to Minors that all Parish and School employees and volunteers are expected to read, sign and follow.

If you are working through a temp agency or have had a fingerprint report done through another employer you will need the Authorization For Release of Records and Reports form above. This authorizes the former entity to release your records to the diocese.  If they comply, you will not have to have the report done at this time.

Additional New Hire Forms Required for School Employees

State law requires all schools (both non-public and public) to conduct an Unprofessional Conduct check on all newly employed teachers with their current or former employers.  The employee will be required to sign the Consent for Release of Information Form which will be kept on file at the school.  The Information Request Form will then be forwarded to the current or former employer for their completion.

Prospective Employees who are working through a temp agency or have had a fingerprint report completed through another employer will need to sign the Authorization For Release of Records and Reports form above.  This authorizes the former entity to release those records to the diocese so the prospective employee will not have to have the report re-done at this time.

Principal and Teacher Contracts

Below are the newest versions of the Principal and Teacher contracts. These are the only contracts that are to be used. Please destroy any copies of older versions that you may have in you files.  We have also added an Offer of Employment to be used for parishes or schools.
