It was established in June of 2004 to help the Archbishop s Liaison to plan and oversee the safe environment efforts . There are three sub- committees for GRACES. The content committee is responsible for the development of the safe environment children/youth program, Circle of Grace. The Policy/Guideline committee is responsible for updating and coordinating training efforts. The continuing Education Committee is responsible for looking at recertification needs. GRACES committee early on researched existing child/prevention programs but did not find one that were faith was integrated into the program. Kids after receiving COG: Last year 4 reports to the authorities after kids were taught COG ( 2 were founded) 3-6 graders told teachers/principals they were uncomfortable with the way a sub teacher touched them resulting in a law enforcement referral and teacher not coming back. Touch was rubbing their shoulders and grabbing them from behind. RE directors report that they have had several youth report thoughts of suicide after COG curriculum A Youth Group member reported being uncomfortable by the way her G.mother s boyfriend hugged her after COG Pastor was able to meet with her parents to reinforcing the need to believe and protect her You can see these examples demonstrate that COG gives a language and framework for Children/youth to let adults know when they are uncomfortable Gives the adults the ability to understand and receive the information It is not uncommon for kids to believe they have told their parents when something bad has happened. in a group therapy session for SA survivors& . Many kids understand boundary violations and that they are suppose to tell someone. But they have not been taught this in context of their sacredness in being a child of God. Story of Mary: Mary was in her late 20 s with a young disabled child in the hospital She was unkempt and had very low self esteem. The hospital social worker came involved because the staff had concerns about her ability to parent A therapeutic relationship developed between the two. One day Mary came to the social worker and said she had something to tell her Mary went on to say that she was SA by her father since the age of 5 The social worker then tried to get Mary in to therapy, groups etc& Mary resisted Mary came to her again and said she had not shared the worst of her experience Mary was then able to share ( with a lot of shame attached) that her father still SA  s her even as an adult. It was the first time that Mary had talked about her abuse to anyone.
