Faith Formation and Evangelization

Christ gave the apostles a final command:

Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything that I have commanded you. And remember, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”

Matthew 28:16-28:20

The name catechesis was given to the whole of the efforts within the Church to make disciples and she has therefore always considered catechesis one of her primary tasks.

“Ongoing catechesis fosters the growth of a more mature faith in the members of the community. It aims to make each person’s faith “living, explicit and active….”
(Decree on the Pastoral Office of Bishops in the Church)

Faith must be known, celebrated, lived, and expressed in prayer. Developing the gift of faith is an ongoing womb to tomb journey that encompasses every state and stage of life. The Secretariat for Faith Development in the Diocese of Gaylord nourishes catechesis that promotes:

  • Knowledge of faith
  • Knowledge and meaning of the liturgy and the sacraments
  • Moral formation in Jesus Christ
  • How to pray with Christ
  • How to live in community and participate actively in the life and mission of the Church
  • A missionary spirit that prepares the faithful to be present as Christians in society.

LLC: Life Long Catechesis

Aligning our vision with Jesus Christ and His Church.

Our Holy Father, Pope Francis in his Apostolic Exhortation Evangelli Gaudium, The Joy of the Gospel, challenges us: “Pastoral ministry in a missionary key seeks to abandon the complacent attitude that says:  'We have always done it this way.'  I invite everyone to be bold and creative in this task of rethinking the goals, structures, style and methods of evangelization in their respective communities.  A proposal of goals without an adequate communal search for the means of achieving them will inevitably prove illusory.  I encourage everyone to apply the guidelines found in this document generously and courageously, without inhibitions or fear.  The important thing is to not walk alone, but to rely on each other as brothers and sisters, and especially under the leadership of the bishops, in a wise and realistic pastoral discernment.”

This statement confirms the work we, as a Diocese, began in “Shining Christ’s Light – Sunrise to Sunset: a Mutually Shared Vision.”

The team for Life-Long Catechesis offers this tool as a help for Pastors, Catechetical Leaders, Parishes, Schools and Institutions in the Diocese of Gaylord to align themselves with the Diocesan guidelines for lifelong formation for all our people.

The main goal of the Commission for Life Long Catechesis was to create a tool to help our Pastors, Catechetical Leaders, Parishes, Schools, and institutions in the Diocese of Gaylord.  This tool took the form of a website for targeting the needs of these groups.  Our site is still under construction, and will continually be updated.  You can click here to see where we are currently at in our work.

Pearls of Faith

As part of the goals of the LLC, the Commission decided to create a publication to keep all our Catechetical Leaders up to date on the events in the diocese.  This publication began in print in September 2016 titled:  Pearls of Faith.  In addition to providing a list of upcoming events, the publication also has articles which provide quick bits of formation for the reader.
