Discipleship Formation Program

What is the Discipleship Formation Program?
The Formation Program was established in 1991 to provide formation and enrichment to the laity of the Diocese of Gaylord. The purpose of the program is twofold: 1) to provide participants an adult understanding of their Catholic faith and 2) to give those who are involved in parish service a stronger spiritual, theological and practical background from which to do their ministry. On-going programs of enrichment for all adults are also provided through the Program as well as through the other diocesan departments.

What is involved in the Discipleship Formation Program?

Phase I:

Spiritual Formation - beginning with an August retreat, the first year involves facilitated monthly faith sharing gatherings in small groups at a regional site. The reflection material used is based on the spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius. This year also includes two seminars: Introduction to Christian Discipleship in the fall and Who Is Jesus? in the spring. A liturgical celebration concludes the year.

Phase II:
Core Curriculum - includes Saturday seminars on the following topics: History of the Church, Church, Sacraments of Initiation, Sacraments of Healing and Witness, Old Testament Studies, and New Testament Studies. A Liturgical celebration concludes the year.
Phase III:
Includes seminars on Eucharist, Introduction to Morality, Role of the Laity and the Church's Social Mission and Ecumenism. The Diocesan Conference and workshops in special areas of ministry or interest are also required. At the local level, participants engage in a "field experience" supported by a mentor. A closing liturgical celebration and ceremony of "sending forth" conclude the formal program.
Alumni:
Continuing opportunities for growth and reflection are provided to those who have completed the program. An annual retreat is provided for alumni.

What about cost?

The program is funded largely by CSA funds, partially by participants and/or their parish. Tuition costs are nominal. Participants are expected to pay for all books and materials. Pastors have been encouraged to help members of their parish to participate. Participants should talk to their pastor regarding this.

Does this mean a paid position when I finish?

This program does not bring any expectations of a paid position in ministry. Often the actual ministries of a person will remain the same, but the ability to minister will be strengthened, to allow him/her to better carry out the mission of the Church, and share what they have gained. In some instances a paid position may result, if such a position exists. Most, however, will continue to work in volunteer ministry.
